Military art prints by Military Artist David Pentland. showing the German defence of Normandy and France during and after D Day. Military prints of Field Marshal Rommel, Oberssturmbannfuhrer Jochim Peiper, and German tanks at the Battle of the Bulge. These German Military  art prints are only available at these prices direct from Cranston Fine Arts

THE BATTLE -Battle of the Bulge (or Ardennes Offensive):

Throughout December and January of 1945 Hitler's code-named plan 'Watch on the Rhine' took place. Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt was to break through the US line at Ardennes in order to create a German salient or 'bulge' which would isolate Allied forces at the north end of the corridor created by the drive. The casualties were tremendous and included Hitler's elite Panzer units. The German counteroffensive, although pinning US troops for some weeks, eventually failed.

Three Panzer units were used in the operation, the 5th, 6th and 7th along with a troop of English-speaking Germans in US uniforms commanded by Otto Skorzeny. The operation began on 16th December on a 113km section of the front line under the watch of US 1st Army and General Bradley's 12th Army. This section of the front had been quiet in the previous months and so the Allies were taken by surprise, and Allied air support could not be scrambled because of poor weather conditions. These factors allowed the German troops to advance quickly.

"Rommel in Normandy" France, 2nd July 1944. by David Pentland Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel, commander of Army Group B, consults with his former subordinate from North Africa, now divisional commander of the elite "Panzer Lehr", General Fritz Bayerlein and the Colonel Rudolf Gerhardt of "Panzer Regiment Lehr", over the imminent transfer of the division to confront the Americans at St. Lo.

Kampfgruppe Peiper by David Pentland Oberssturmbannfuhrer Jochim Peiper, commander of the armoured spearhead of 1st SS Panzer Division, in conference with some of the officers of other units under his command. Aside form men and tanks of his own division, these included King tigers of the 501st heavy tank battalion and paratroops of 1st battalion, 9th Fallschrimjager regiment.

Lysander Pick Up by Graeme Lothian.

A Lysander of 161 Squadron from RAF Tempsford banks to port as it circles a field somewhere in France 1943. These missions only took place on or around the full moon period to pick up or drop off SOE agents with the help of the Resistance. 161 Squadron, the most secret of all RAF squadrons, had in its flight, Lysanders, Hudsons, and Halifaxes which carried out parachute operations. Two of 161s top pilots Hugh Verity and Lewis Hodges both received the DSO & bar and DFC & bar, and from France the Legion dHonneur and the Croix de Guerre.

Driving his panzer into the village of Villers Bocage. he proceeded to destroy the Stuart and Cromwell tanks of Viscount Arthur Cranleys 4th County of London Yeomanry the Sharpshooters RHQ. Although subsequently immobilized in the village center, the battle between the British 7th Armoured Division Desert Rats and Wittmanns 101st Heavy Tank Battalion continued for a full day, and blunted the British threat to the German line.

Prepare to Ram, Operation Goodwood, normandy, 18th July 1944 by David Pentland.

While probing forward near Cagny on the initial day of the Goodwood offensive, Lt John Gorman, a troop commander of 2nd Armoured Battalion, Irish Guards, suddenly found himself confronted by a Tiger II and three Tiger Is of the elite 503rd Heavy Tank Battalion. Supported by only one other Sherman, and aware that their 75mm guns would be ineffective against such monsters, he gave the order to his driver to ram the King tiger. Gormans tank Ballyragget succeeded in colliding with its target before the Tigers 88mm gun could be brought to bear on his Sherman, and with both tanks immobilised the crews quickly abandoned their tanks. Lt. Gorman, however, was not finished and making his way off the field, he returned shortly afterwards with a Sherman Firefly, to finish off the stricken Tiger II and one of the Tiger Is. For this action he was awarded the Military Cross, and his driver L/Cpl Baron the Military Medal.

In their defense of the northern flank of what is to become the Falaise Gap the new Jagdpanzer IV in particular is to prove a formidable foe to the attacking British and Canadian tanks.

"Debut at Caumont", Normandy 30th July, 1944 by David Pentland DHM1027  The Jagdpanther was considered by many to have been the most potent anti-tank weapon of the war, combining the armoured lines of the Panther tank and awesome power of the 88mm gun. This was probably first demonstrated during the British advance through the Caumont Gap during "Operation Bluecoat" when the Jagdpanthers of Heavy Tank Battalion 654 engaged the Churchills of the 6th Guards Tank Brigade. A squadron of Churchills covering Point 226 suddenly started exploding one after another. Breaking cover from the "Bois du Homme" 2 Jagdpanthers covered by a third proceeded to pick off more of the British tanks only retreating when they came under fire. Although the 2 Jagdpanthers had to be abandoned due to track damage, they managed to destroy 14 of the Scots Guards tanks in an engagement which lasted only 2 minutes!
